Free Pokies Australia – Play Free Online Pokies With No Download

What are free pokies?

Free pokies, also called demo pokies, free-play pokies or, overseas, free online slots, are the full version of a real online pokie loaded with a virtual balance instead of real money. The reels, symbols, paytable, bonus rounds and RTP are identical to the real-money game; the only thing missing is the cash. You cannot win real money in demo mode, and you cannot lose any either. That makes free online pokies the best way to learn a new game, test different bet sizes and discover which features you actually enjoy.

For Australians used to the pokies at the local club, demo mode fixes the big problem with land-based machines: you never have to put in a tenner just to find out how a game works. Once you have a favourite, the best real money online pokies sites in our ranking let you play the same title for real with AUD.

How to play free pokies with no download and no registration

Modern pokies are built in HTML5 and run straight in your browser, so there is nothing to download or install on a computer, iPhone or Android phone. Here is how to start:

1. Open a casino lobby

Go to the pokies section of a licensed casino. Many show games to visitors who are not logged in.

2. Hover or tap on a game

Look for a "Demo", "Fun Play" or "Try" button next to the real-money "Play" button.

3. Spin with the virtual balance

You get a set amount of play money, often 1,000 to 5,000 credits. Refresh the game to top it up.

4. Open the info panel

Check RTP, volatility, max win and how the bonus triggers. This is the most useful thing you can learn in demo mode.

A few casinos only show demos after you create an account, and some titles, especially live dealer games and progressive jackpots, never have a demo. Progressive jackpots cannot be won for free, because the prize pool is real money.

Best free online pokies to try first

If you are new, these are the demos we recommend in order: they each teach you a different mechanic that you will see again and again across thousands of pokies.

• Starburst (NetEnt). Low volatility and both-ways wins. The classic way to learn paylines and expanding wilds.
• Book of Dead (Play'n GO). The "book" mechanic: one random symbol expands during free spins. Hugely popular in Australia.
• Big Bass Bonanza (Pragmatic Play). Collect-style free spins, where a fisherman wild scoops up cash-value fish.
• Gates of Olympus (Pragmatic Play). Pay-anywhere tumbles and random multipliers. Watch how quickly the balance can swing.
• Wolf Gold (Pragmatic Play). Hold-and-win Money Respins with Mini, Major and Mega jackpots, the closest thing to a club Link machine.
• Bonanza Megaways (Big Time Gaming). The original Megaways from the Sydney studio, with up to 117,649 ways to win and cascading reels.

You will find RTP and volatility for all of these, plus the reasons we rank them, on our top online pokies page.

Free pokies vs real money pokies

The honest summary: demos are for learning, real money is for winning. Once a demo stops teaching you anything new, you have got what you need from it. Our real money pokies guide explains how to make the switch without blowing your first deposit.

Free spins: the closest thing to free pokies with real wins

If you want to play for free and still keep what you win, free spins are the answer. A no deposit bonus gives you spins on selected pokies just for signing up, and a welcome package such as our top pick's A$10,800 + 250 free spins adds hundreds more on your first deposits. Winnings from free spins are real money once you have met the wagering requirement, and usually capped at a set amount on no deposit offers. It is the best of both worlds, as long as you read the terms first.

Free pokies apps and mobile play

Every free pokie that runs in a desktop browser also runs on your phone, with no app needed. Open the casino in Safari or Chrome, tap the demo button and the game fills the screen in portrait or landscape. If you would like a one-tap icon, add the casino to your home screen; our casino apps Australia guide shows how. Social casino apps in the App Store and Google Play also offer free pokies, including some Aristocrat titles. They are legal in Australia because they pay no cash prizes, but they do sell virtual coins, so watch what you spend.

Are free pokies legal in Australia?

Yes. Playing free pokies in demo mode is not gambling under Australian law, because there is no stake and no cash prize. Social casino apps are regulated as games rather than gambling. For real-money play, the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 applies to operators, not players. The full explanation is on our Australian online casino page.

When to switch from free pokies to real money

• You understand how the bonus triggers and what a typical feature pays at your stake.
• You have chosen a budget you are genuinely happy to spend on entertainment.
• You have picked a licensed casino that accepts AUD and pays out quickly.
• You know your limits and have set a deposit limit in the casino account.

If any of these are not true yet, stay on the demo. There is no rush. If you ever feel the need to play for real to "win back" money, stop and visit our responsible gambling page.
